[Written at 30,000 feet on the airplane.]
Thursday, February 11. Clear with a warming trend. [Wouldn't you know it, as we were leaving?]
Doug was up at 4.40 AM, verifying that Hawaiian Airlines was indeed flying today. [They were], and that we still were expected at the Hotel in Honolulu. [We were.]
Soon the other members of the group were coming to life.
Living out of a suitcase is not a lot of fun. Combine this with the security involvement at the airport makes for a somewhat stressful day. We had a cab loaded and on the way at 6.30 AM. Hawaiian check-in was just opening and the line was formidable.
We took a chance and went to the self check-in machines that are there for you to do your own check-in, print your boarding pass and baggage claim checks. This can be risky, but it worked like a charm today.
Next is security with all the pitfalls of that nowadays. Again, all well. After we became fully clothed again we grabbed a bite to eat, [a muffin and coffee] and soon we were boarded and departed on time. Wow, things are going well today!
We turned our clocks back two hours and sat back like sardines for the six hour flight to Paradise.
We are booked at a beach front tower on Waikiki Beach. We made the decision some many, many months ago to book a suite, so we are hopeful of nice digs whilst here. This is the most expensive accommodation so far, but the room rate was cut in half because of our involvement with Maui Hill where we have a condo.
The couple in front of us have their seats in the recline position.
I asked the lady in front of me to let me know if she was going to come back further because I had my laptop open and if she did she would crush it and me, [I was very nice about it.] Of course I cannot go back in my seat, [I rarely do], because we have the Bennett's behind us. It is certainly a good thing that I have lost weight on this trip or this would not work out to well.
[This is written the next morning].
The hotel exceeded our expectations, and within minutes of entering the suite the four of us were seated on the balcony on the ninth floor like little kids, with our feet up looking in wonderment at the scene before us; palm trees, rolling surf, blue sky and Waikiki Beach in all it's beauty with the surfers and water-walkers practicing their skills or lack of them before us.
I exchanged sunset pictures with my brother on Maui, now only 128 miles away. What a wonderful world!
Unpack, get three loads of laundry in, have a swim, then a relax, then out to dinner. We ate at a restaurant adjacent to us where one of the walls is the side of a 25 foot high salt water aquarium. Occasionally a mermaid swims down with a Happy Birthday sign for the patrons who booked it. It was a seafood buffet. No doubt many of you have been there for dinner or just a look-see.
GREAT TO BE IN THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. Even if I had to look at a balding head for 2560 miles, the wing tip looked better!
Meanwhile at home the Olympics are under way!
I wonder if Canada Ticket can sue the Vancouver Sun for plagiarism for stealing our wording today that has been on the side of Canada Ticket with a 45 foot banner for the past three weeks?
