A day in Wales...

Monday. June 8. Sunny but windy.

It was a glorious day from beginning to end, bright sun, blue sky and fluffy clods for good photography.

We picked an easy tour today which was a ride to Carew Castle some 1/2 hour drive through the city of Milford Haven and the countryside. There has been a form of castle or fortification here since Iron Age days, which was between 1200 BC to 700 AD, so, a long time!

It has been added to, abandonded, restored, added to again and again. They are no longer doing restoration but just stopping deterioration. We had more than enogh time to wander the walls and towers with few visitors to bother us. The sunny day made it all the better.

Next we bused to the seaside town of Tenby. It was about as quaint as it gets, narrow streets, few cars, lots of small shops selling everything from Tenby Rock, [a hard candy], to sausage rolls.

Our idea of a beach is certainly different than a Welshman's for sure. The cold water and chilly wind almost made me feel sorry for the little kiddies in their bathing costumes as they are called here. I stillremember  my days in a wet suit and the wind blowing on my shivering skinny little body.

We wandered the seaside and then headed idoor to grab a bite to eat before heady back to the ship for a hot cup of tea and a short nap.

Tomorrow we are in Dublin, Southern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. It is also our 53rd anniversary tomorrow so we have booked a table for two in a special dining room.

The day after that is a sea day, which I am very much looking forward to it.

Today was not what I would call an exciting day, but we needed a bit of a break from physical exercise. The rather unexciting pictures gives you some idea of our very laid back day.

I should point out that the Mayor of Milford Haven was on the dock to greet us this morning and shook every single hand. Upon returning to the ship, there were pretty Welsh lasses handing out Welsh Cakes and the recipe for them. We noticed all day that the residents do seem to be very laid back and friendly.

I always wondered where Pembrokeshire was!

The flag of Wales.

Castle Carew, or the ruins of it.

A banquet hall where they do have weddings etc.

This was my best picture of the day.

A view from the castle heights.

Guess who?

Fellette took this from the very top. This is what the defending Normans would have seen as the Welshmen tried to take back the castle.

Brrr. There were some hardy souls in there.

Overlooking a city beach.

Look at the size of that 'fish', she ordeded Fish and Chips. She could not finish it.

This is a little lounge that is down the hall from us. You cannot really overindulge here, is is more to nibble on.

  1. I remember Temby beach when we visited whilst staying nearby in St David's in 2008. It was windswept then too.
