How to Spell Kodiak...

Thursday August 22. Slight drizzle and haze. 18 C.

Kodiak is an Island located at the very southern tip of Alaska just before it swoops out into the Aleutian Islands towards eastern Russia.
We took the shuttle to town in a light drizzle to get some exercise and see this very fishing oriented town, [city?].
We have not gone on any rather expensive excursions in search of bears, whales, otters and such as we have 'been there, done that', sorry to appear so blasé.

So, on the walk today I was fascinated by how many, most of the establishments in the town have very basic and down-to-business signs on their establishments. I thought that some of my photos today would give you a very good idea of what this place is all about. That is why the name of this post today is:

How to spell Kodiak? The answer is FISH!

We sail tonight for Dutch Harbour, [the place that the TV show 'Dangerous Catch' ships sail from], the last Alaskan Port with a sea day in between. Then we head for Russia across the Aleutian Islands. We now have nine days before we hit Japan, six of those are sea days!
We also have multiple time zone changes and some where in the mix we lose a day as we cross the Dateline. The ocean above the Aleutians is the Bering Sea and below where we will be is is the North Pacific.

The photos below were all taken within 20 minutes as we made our way back to the ship. A very hard working town it is.

Kodiak was the Russian capital of Russian Alaska. The US bought it in 1867.
Looks like 1940.
A tire repair shop, in use, looks like 50 years ago in Surrey where we lived.
I wonder what they sell?
Says it all.
Ditto.
Refrigerator trucks, full of frozen seafood, waiting to be shipped.
Crab pots ready for the season, whenever that is.
A sign on a local building.

A sea otter floating between the fishing boats in the harbour.
This is a real Kodiak Bear, stuffed in 'Big Ray's Outfitters Store' where I bought an inexpensive vest today. Lovely looking big brute.
