The heavens opened for us early this morning as we pulled into the port. Not to worry, is was still about 85 F out with 95% humidity.
We had a leisurely start to the day and so did about 1000 others as we waited to see what the day was going to bring us. It stopped raining quickly and remained cloudy basically all day. We got off around 9.00 and off we went, [Moe, Fellette and Doug], with some domestic errands in mind.
The city once again, fronts the harbour with the business section in the first few streets and tapering back up the mountain to apartments and then private homes.
It is a bustling place, a bit too busy for me. I was not sure if I was in Kahalui, Maui, Pennang or Singapore. A bit of each I think. It also has a distinct French feel to it of course, the prices tell you that very quickly. Our inability to speak French once again hobbled our ability to find anything quickly, and frankly, the people you ask do not really give a darn. As a result all of our goals for the morning were incomplete.
Our stomachs told us it was time to eat but somehow where we were was not too conducive to have a memorable lunch in Papeete! Back to ms Air-Conditioning for a refreshing beverage before a bite to eat.
After lunch Fellette and I ventured back into town on our own but were soon driven back to the ship by the mid-afternoon traffic jams after we got to an ATM that worked for us. The unsavory characters around the tattoo parlour dissuaded me from supplementing my tattoo library.
There were tours throughout the day that we chose not to go on. It was like a day in Lahaina without the ability to speak the language.
My friend Andy has a name for certain sites that become repetitive while touring: "ABC", that can be Another Big City or Another Beautiful Cathedral. Today we visited AHHTC: Another Hot & Humid Tropical City. Tomorrow we hope to get out in the country, or at least out of the port of Pao Pao on Moorea that is a three hour sail from here.
Can you spot Moe in the photo of the market in Papeete below?
