Friday, March 21. Calm seas, hot as heck and the ocean is like a mill pond!
No one topic today but just a series of meaningless drivel I am afraid today folks, so lower your expectations.
The captain announced at noon that our 'garland of razor wire' will be coming off in Mauritius two days hence as we have passed through the southern limit of 'high hazard zone' regarding pirates.

Housekeeping:
I stand corrected when I erroneously stated many day earlier that the population of Indonesia was 300,000,000. It is somewhat less, more like 240,000,000. It is very hard to check facts without quick internet access.

It froze in Vancouver the other night which makes me pleased! [Oh dear, is that bad?] I do not want to be behind in our spring planting when we get home.

Have you ever heard the term 'Retail Therapy'? It sounds laughable but I am afraid that it is a real thing in this day and age. I suspect that all of us who are able, get a bit of some sort of satisfaction when we purchase something. Think about a new car, or a piece of furniture, or some new shoes, a dress or even a tie, or less. Yet, I have found out that that Retail Therapy is built into some people aboard this vessel. I cannot believe how the 'shops' at ports are somehow a sort of Mecca, mostly to women.
Having a shopping list is one thing, or even browsing for fun, but how many bangles, rings, necklaces, gold chains or the like can one ageing women have? My gosh, there must be a lot of disposable income aboard either that or husbands who are afraid of reigning in their wives.
Sorry if I have offended anyone but I do not think that there is enough jewelry in the world to bring back some former glimpse of former beauty. However, we all look in a mirror and see what we want to see, not what is there. I am guilty of this.
For example, yesterday we received an invitation to…

So we walked into the suite…what a pile of crap, a few fancy Easter Eggs displayed in this luxurious suite with a spiel by some foreigner with an intriguing accent. The lowest price of anything in the room was $6000. Some of our guests will no doubt feel compelled to buy, yet three days from now it will be something else that they must 'just have to have'. I pity them.

Tonight was a formal night, 'White Night', it is sometimes called 'Black and White Night'. We four went up to the crow's nest for a drink before dinner where most people dressed very elegantly. I had this head dress that I bought in Bali some many years ago and donned it, just for kicks. I checked with our room stewards and it does not designate a religion but is just a cap that many Balinese men wear on dress up occasions.
Now I am not a person that likes a lot of attention, but I persisted for the evening and wore that cap, as a result, we had a lot of interesting conversation and not a few glances by people wondering, 'is this guy a Muslim?' or else, 'Who is this jerk?' I prefer the former. The Indonesian staff were pleased to see one of the symbols of the country worn in public.

After dinner I retired to the room to work on my photo album and do the blog while Fellette and the Cutler's went to the show in the lounge. A good day all in all.
