In Barbados...

Tuesday, April 22. High haze in the sky, hot, F 81. Moored.

Day 108 of 113. [6 more sleeps]

We were out and about around 5.30 am again this morning, that seems to be some wake-up time thing stuck in our brain lately. I suppose when we get home and go to bed later it will be a slightly later rising time.

We are about to enter what I call, The North American Environment, no more bare-breasted women or extreme poverty here or Zulu dancers to meet us. Sure, the Caribbean is not Vancouver or Sacramento, but it is closer in atmosphere than Papua New Guinea and some of the other exciting places we have visited the last three months.

Our Day in Barbados

After we docked we went ashore and browsed through the sheds and shops at the dock area. It was hot and quite a breeze out and we were soon back on the ship after a good look at all the wares on offer. After 108 days the shops seem to have lost some of their appeal, to me/us at least.

We had a light bite to eat before meeting our van at the terminal for our Segway Tour. There were only a total of five on the tour, four passengers and the ship's rep. We had a 40 minute ride to the extreme north east side of the island, passing through a variety of housing arrangements; from millionaire homes to little Chattel Cottages, so named because they fold up and can be moved in a flash.

We were soon in the hills and cattle country where we stopped and met our three guides for the tour. After gearing up in helmets, knee and elbow pads and a few test drives we were off on the less-travelled paths through cattle fields, palm trees, light forest and cliff-top stops to take photos. It was highly exhilarating, an adrenaline high.

We finished our tour of the countryside and we went onto country roads for some time where we snaked our way through the residential area that looks like it did a hundred years ago. Or at least how I imagine it did. The wind was strong all day long but particularly at cliff tops, overlooking the sea, pounding in from the Atlantic with great fury.

We were too soon back at the start point where we were refreshed by ice cold rum punch. I think that the last rum punch we had was in the Caribbean many years ago and I forgot how delicious it is and how easy it is to drink! We were back at the ship in jig time and promptly turned out the lights and collapsed on the bed. After we sailed we showered and ordered room service and went to bed early to regain our strength for tomorrow morning's horseback adventure!

This trip today was amongst the best Ship's Tour we have had the whole trip!
