On the Chinese Train Now...

Monday night, August 27. Rain earlier.

It was an interesting several hours since I last gave a report. The day has dragged on and on. Customs, immigration and some pretty grumpy people. We had lunch in a restaurant, that was nice, then we toured a bit in this city of 85,000, then we visited a dinosaur park, [?], then wee visited a city market and then we ate again.

The whole thing revolves around the train schedule. Chinese train schedule!

It has been somewhat confusing all day and reached a peak when we arrived at the RR Station and found that our checked luggage had been x-rayed prior to loading. Anything suspicious and they put the luggage aside and on the floor, you opened your bag and inspectors rifled through it taking out dangerous looking things like a corkscrew, mosquito spray, [?], shaving cream, [?], and small knives.

We then took our rucksacks and they were put through the X-ray machine. Mine was pulled out because of a Swiss Army Knife. We were told to pack a jackknife, so I did.

I raised a bit of a stink and said I want to mail it to Canada!!! Lots of talking through our guide to various people, no resolution to date. Third world security here today, of all days as we are all tired and grumpy.

When we finally got on the train there was no power so we found our cabins in the dark. We fumbled our way and found it. It will do for the next 16 hours until we get to Beijing.

There are two toilets at either end of the car, but they are locked until the train moves! The day continues…

Forgive any errors please.

The Railway Station at last...
