Friday, January 13. Our Day in Lima

Cloudy, pleasant.

Tour day today for us four! Off to learn about pre-Inc and Inca. On the bus and away we went around 9:00 AM.

First stop was the National Museum of anthropology and history of Peru. A modest but extremely well done and maintained Museum with our excellent guide.

I finally have the Inca Civilization figured out. It is simple once you have had five lectures on it and spent time in a museum dedicated to that subject and busted their turf.

Next stop was a site that had 16 pyramids built on the very large expanse covering several kilometres over a period of several hundred years. A pyramid is our equivalent of a church. The great pyramid today was the equivalent of a cathedral, or, the Vatican, to put it in modern terms.

Some were built with squared rock foundations and mud bricks. The mud bricks that were exposed to the elements have eroded slightly but the ones below have stood the test of time due to the very low rainfall here. No rain is not unusual. Low fog or cloud seems to be sufficient to sustain some vegetation. Interesting and well explained. This site was not covered in sand like in Egypt but had sort of rounded off and eroded somewhat and was only taken serious in the last 100 years or so.

Next stop, not 10 minutes in time from the flat top pyramids, was a Hacienda where we were treated to a great show with Peruvian horses and some Peruvian culture in the form of dancing. This was followed by a lunch in the garden and some good conversation and commaradie loosed by a drink called a Pisco Sour. We were all warned by the ship about the pitfalls of this local drink but caution seemed to go out the window after one sip! I know some people who had two!

We had by now had been on tour over six hours and we all seemed to nod off on the way back but were awake and came to life when we saw the array of goods that some merchants had set up on the dock beside the ship. methinks they will do quite well as we are her for two nights and a good hunk of the last day.

*************

On the development front we received the go ahead from Langley yesterday so we should be moving some dirt pretty darn soon.

The Inca Trail,  truly.

Are we having fun yet?

Back on the dock after seven hours away!
