The day looked like a loser for a while today... it was drizzling, Jim has a sore throat and the shuttle bus dropped us off at a modern ugly shopping mall! Gail soon had a lady in tow who spoke Spanglish and we four were soon crammed into a tiny chevrolet and tooling through the streets of Lima to Old Lima, which is what we wanted.
We soon found ourselves in the centre of an area with magnificent old beautiful buildings and some not so beautiful buildings. We parked in a parkade and were off on foot to explore the sights.
The sights today were mainly religious as there was a religious procession in the streets heading for the cathedral where every seat was taken by the devout where I felt very out of place with my camera around my neck. We followed our guide around and then out onto the streets and off to see the catacombs in another church. Sorry, no photographs in there.
That catacomb tour took a bit more than an hour alone. Back into the tiny Chevrolet and back to the Mall drop off where we could catch the shuttle back to the ship. Before that we had our lunch in a Peruvian restaurant. The fare today was meat and chicken plate for four. The girls drank Sangria while Jim and I opted for good old reliable cold beer. Total $49.00.
Back to the ship and a latte and get ready for a conventional church service on board as we sail away to Chile after a day at sea.
It was impossible to capture the sights and sounds of the endless-it-seems procession.
They take their religion very, very serious. It was almost a pilgrimage it seems.
The young and old all seemed very comfortable in their colourful traditional dress.
Meanwhile, these very plain looking white folk...
There was one large plaza with about 10 of these identical buildings all in various stages of repair or disrepair, now housing for the less privileged I think.
What would a blog be without a picture of this crowd having a meal in a foreign port?
