Thursday January 12. A further word on food.

Cooler, overcast.

I touched on the selection of foods for dinner recently. I will elaborate since we are on a sea day before we get to Lima, Peru tomorrow.

As you can sense, this is a decadent way to spend your time and a lot of money. The cruise line does not want to have any complaints from this crowd as many are loyal Holland America travellers. So food is one of the myriad of things that they go to great lengths to leave no reason for complaints.

For example. Oatmeal for breakfast. They have three kinds, steel-cut, regular and some other. Over the years people have asked for or suggested various things. Desserts always have a no sugar added selection, same for ice cream. There is always a fish or two on the menu, same as a fowl, lamb, pork and beef.

I went around the upstairs buffet quickly at lunch time and took a few snaps of the selection that we face when we go up to the Lido. This goes on for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They happened to have an ice-cream thing outside today. Actually sometimes this is more like Adult-Day-Care than a ship. They were playing games of bean-bag toss and bouncing tennis balls into a bucket game as we had lunch outside today.

I find it interesting to witness all these older people, most of whom have had interesting and some, powerful, jobs when younger, relaxing seemingly without a care in the world, back in their second childhood. Good for them I say.

In our little Neptune Lounge there is always a dainty selection of snacks to enjoy in a quiet and luxurious setting. We sometimes have a quick breakfast there and we are often the only ones there except for the girl attendant who is there for 12 hours a day. She is like a mini Purser who can look after our needs or wants. The Lounge is for the use of suites of which there are only 21 on this ship.

Last night was Panama Hat formal night and Jim and Gail invited us to their new cabin for a glass of bubbly before dinner.
