Southampton, England

January 9, cold but clear.

Tomorrow around noon we join the ship, which will dock about 1/2 K from our hotel. Somehow our world is really a bit mixed up. Since Wednesday at 11.00 AM when we received the email from British Airways cancelling our flight we have been in a state of uncertainty. We could count on nothing, nor were we in control of the situation. That takes a bit to get out of our system. It is still hard for us to believe that we can come and go, do our own thing without fear of breaching some bureaucratic rule. Enough of that.

We awoke this morning not jet-lagged at all. I think our system was so mixed up with the situation the last three days that it reset itself last night. That is good news because usually we are dozing off every few hours or so.

The day was spent catching up with Ian and Judy, out for a brisk stroll and a browse through the very modern shops on the waterfront. This I was not expecting. Somehow I thought that Southampton was a seaport with everything hinging on shipping and cruise lines. It is indeed, but a worthy modern city on it's own rights.

Not a lot noteworthy happened today. We did have an interesting exchange of communications with son Wally and the contractor. What a difference email and cell phones with cameras make. The build is coming nicely and the roofers were actually working on a rainy Saturday. Wonderful.

Tomorrow morning we have cabs arranged to pick us up and take us to the ship. With luck we should be settled in early to mid afternoon. We are fully expecting the ship to sail later than the scheduled 6.00 PM. The reasoning is that the road situation in the UK is still terrible and no doubt some overseas passengers may have difficulty getting aboard in time. We are looking forward to getting in the cabin and calling it home for the next three weeks.
