Sunday at Sea...

Sunday, January 17. Smoother with a slight swell, high clouds, 21 C. Great sunrise today.

The secret of getting up later is to go to bed later. Last night I think I crossed the sleep barrier thing. We went to a dinner at The Orchid, a special restaurant separate from the main dining room. It was wonderful. The conversation at the main table with our new table mates is always very pleasant but somewhat bland and reserved. It was great to have a dinner, and nicely served in lovely surroundings, with just the four of us.

After that we went to the Piano Bar for a bit of culture where I had difficulty in trying to stay awake as it was past my normal early bed time. [As a matter of fact I wrote Ian a formal apology this morning for nodding off when he was talking to me. I suppose he was also a bit groggy because he said that he never noticed me napping!] Then off to see the show which was what they call a 'Cabaret' act. A male singer who is also somewhat of a comic. Light relief it was. To bed around 12 and then Zonko! Next thing I knew it was 6.20.

This morning we attended the Church Service in the large theatre. About 300 attended the rather predictable British Church Service, lead by the Commodore, [our captain]. A reading by the Cruise Director, several prayers, and four rather dirge-like hymns. Followed by the first verse of God Save the Queen.

There is always one hymn sung on British ships. It is called the Seaman's Hymn, the final line of each verse is 'For those in peril on the sea'. Funny, I never thought we were in peril until we sang it! The hymn book almost automatically opens to that page because of frequent usage.

We had a few laps around the deck that is now populated by sun and warmth seeking winter escapees from Britain. We still have not met nor heard a Canadian or American on board.

Ship trivia:

The ship generates 47,000 horsepower and uses one gallon of fuel every 52 feet of distance we travel. That is about 1/100th of a mile per gallon. Which when you consider it has about 1900 people on board it is no worse than all of us driving and getting 19 miles per gallon!!!
