Sunday, March12. Docked in Port Elizabeth. Cooler, overcast, a few sprinkles. 22 C.
Off around 9:00 on a Magic Carpet Coach for 1 1/4 hours to a Game Park where we loaded into 10-passenger Safari Vans for a three hour Game Drive, driven by a handsome young South African called Raouel.
He drove us all over this spacious area, I know not how big, that has Lions, Leopards, Cape Buffalo, elephants and Rhino. We saw two of the Big Five: Rhino and Cape Buffalo, plus score of other antelopes, especially Impala, in large herds called Harems, overseen by one Male.
It was unlike our other Safaris in East Africa where the areas were massive and without barriers. Here, they have all sorts of small game, but in minute quantities compared to Kenya and Tanzania.
It took a while to get used to the idea of small quantities but it was thrilling to get in a Safari Vehicle and take off on the hunt for whatever might be on the horizon or around the corner. The air had a specific smell that we have not smelt since last bouncing around somewhere in Tanzania or the Masai Mara. Beautiful!
Sea Day Tomorrow, then Cape Town for two days.
Not the Best Safari Ever: But A Great Day…
Loaded up, let’s go. Robins and Cutlers first four.
Adult Male Giraffe.
Bontebok, specific to South Africa.
Blesbok, specific to South Africa.
Likely a Cheetah Kill, small impala.
Zebra.
Biggest Rhino ever! Imported from further north where poachers are more active to ensure his survival. The horn was cut off some time ago to make him less attractive to poachers but it continues to grow.
A Harem of Impala, all looked after by one tired male, until a younger male takes over.
Fellette and I during a sprinkle. Photo by Jim.
