Wednesday, April 12. Light rain in am, clearing later. 13 C, chilly. Day 99, 29 to go.
We awoke to the ship pulling into this port in dark and light rainy conditions. As dawn came and we could actually see the place, before us was a massive city that stretched seemingly forever along the waterfront. It is located on the Northwest top corner the Iberian Peninsula that makes up Spain and Portugal.
We lingered in the suite until the ship was cleared and people on tours had taken off for the morning or whole day. We ate and walked out on the open back deck to appraise the situation that lay before us. Nothing appealed to us, the chilly windy weather nor the unappealing mass of white buildings and shops and endless walking so we made the decision to stay aboard.
Fellette went for a long solo swim and I went to the near-empty gym and gave some muscles an important work out that you cannot get on this ship by walking alone. Somehow our life at home gets most of our body a pretty good overall workout. Shipboard life is not good for your body regarding muscle tone and the diet certainly doesn’t help either!
The Captain announced at noon today that we have a weather situation that makes it necessary to have an itinerary change as follows: We will stay in this Port, A Corùna, six hours later than intended. We will set sail tonight at 11:00 pm and whip across the mouth of the Bay of Biscay at higher speed to shorten the crossing time and while we are all in our warm and cozy beds, skipping the intended port of Brest, France, and getting to Weymouth early, weathering out some rough weather until our berth at Weymouth is ready and carry on the intended itinerary from there. Weymouth is also the same as the Port of Portland.
Oddly enough, our Grandfather’s Travelling Chest that we have in use at our home, has the Label Portland on it as it is a Seaside Southern England Port that they obviously visited while living in England prior to Emigrating to Canada in 1912 when our Father was only 11 months old.
Interesting and Relaxing Day In Port And Onboard…
View from back of the ship.
A very Spanish looking piece of architecture. I have no idea what it is used for now.
A small boat harbour just aft of us.This is not a cute little Spanish Fishing port!
The way out. It had no appeal to us.
Fellette had the pool to herself.
